ClickHeat is an open-source, lightweight heatmap tool designed to visualize where users click on a website, providing a straightforward way to understand user interaction patterns. Unlike more comprehensive analytics platforms, ClickHeat focuses specifically on click density, turning raw click data into intuitive color-coded heatmaps that highlight “hot” areas with high interaction and “cold” areas with little to no engagement. This makes it particularly useful for identifying confusing layouts, misleading navigation cues, or underutilized page elements. The tool is self-hosted and requires a PHP-enabled server with the GD2 graphics library, making it accessible for small to medium-sized sites without relying on third-party services or subscriptions. Installation involves adding a small JavaScript snippet to the pages you want to track, and data is logged directly to files rather than a database, which keeps the system lightweight and low-maintenance for moderate traffic volumes. However, this file-based approach can become challenging for very high-traffic sites, and ClickHeat lacks advanced features such as session replay, scroll tracking, or funnel analysis, limiting its insights to clicks only.
