PENSA is a national digital health information platform developed by the Ministry of Health (MISAU) in partnership with Source Code to provide free, reliable, and validated health information to citizens in Mozambique. Launched in 2017, the platform is accessible through USSD (*660#), smartphone applications, SMS, WhatsApp, and web interfaces, ensuring inclusion even for users with basic mobile phones and no internet access. PENSA delivers up-to-date information on illnesses, maternal and child health, vaccines, first aid, mental health, and nearby health facilities, all managed and updated in real time by health authorities. The system also disseminates targeted SMS alerts, including outbreak notifications such as cholera warnings, based on geographic location and user profiles. Beyond information access, PENSA supports public accountability through an anonymous complaints and claims channel that allows citizens to report medicine shortages, poor service, and unjustified charges in health facilities. With over five million users and more than seventy million interactions, PENSA plays a critical role in reducing barriers to health information, strengthening public health communication, and empowering citizens to make informed health decisions anytime, anywhere.
