About REPETITA

REPETITA is an open-source experimentation framework that helps networking researchers conduct repeatable, comparable performance evaluations of traffic-engineering algorithms using standardized datasets, configurable solvers, automated scenarios, theoretical baselines, and extensible tools for analysing congestion, routing overhead, robustness, and execution time consistently.

REPETITA is a Java-based, open-source framework created to improve the repeatability and comparability of traffic-engineering experiments. It provides a structured environment where researchers can evaluate algorithms without rebuilding experimental datasets, network models, evaluation procedures, and analytical tools from scratch. Its architecture separates experiments into settings, solvers, and scenarios. Settings contain network topologies, traffic matrices, capacities, delays, weights, and routing configurations. Solvers represent traffic-engineering algorithms that modify routing configurations to improve network performance. Scenarios define evaluation procedures and measurable outcomes, including maximum link utilization, routing overhead, execution time, and failure robustness. REPETITA includes over 250 realistic network topologies, with five synthetic traffic matrices generated for each topology. Supported algorithms include IGP Weight Optimization, Segment Routing Mixed Integer Linear Programming, and the DEFO constraint-programming heuristic. A multi-commodity flow linear program supplies a theoretical performance baseline. Researchers can run experiments through command-line instructions, connect external solver executables written in different programming languages, or implement algorithms using the included traffic-engineering libraries. Its plugin-oriented architecture also supports additional datasets, solvers, routing primitives, and analytical scenarios.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Promotes reproducibility in networking research, a cornerstone of the scientific method.
  • Publicly released code and datasets lower the barrier for new research.
  • Plugin-oriented architecture allows for easy extension and community contributions.
  • Showcases the ability to reproduce results from existing literature.
Cons
  • This is a research framework, not a commercial product, and lacks user-friendly interfaces or commercial support.
  • Use requires technical expertise in networking, traffic engineering, and associated programming environments.
  • The focus is specific to intra-domain traffic-engineering algorithms.

Features

Key features

Repeatable Experiments

Publicly Released Code

The implementation is publicly available to encourage community use, contribution, and extension.

Plugin-Oriented Architecture

Designed to be easily extended with new datasets, algorithms, TE primitives, and analyses.

State-of-the-Art Algorithm Implementation

Includes implementations for IGP weight tweaking and Segment Routing optimization.

Diverse Datasets

Provides network topologies and traffic matrices for comprehensive performance evaluation.

Additional features

Settings Management

Groups topology data, traffic matrices, link capacities, delays, IGP weights, Segment Routing information, and explicit paths into complete problem instances that solvers and scenarios can process consistently during controlled traffic-engineering experiments across many network configurations and demand patterns.

Segment Routing MILP

Uses Gurobi to solve a mixed integer linear program that selects Segment Routing detours, minimizes maximum link utilization, limits each demand to one detour, assumes even load balancing, and reduces variables through an efficient modified node-link formulation.

IGP Weight Optimization

Applies local search to identify link weights that minimize maximum utilization, supports shortest-path routing comparisons, and uses reusable traffic-engineering libraries for path computation, link-load calculation, and concise implementation of established weight-optimization methods directly within reproducible experimental settings.

Traffic Matrix Generation

Uses a randomized gravity model to synthesize realistic demand matrices, creates five matrices for every topology, and scales traffic so optimal maximum link utilization reaches ninety percent, producing challenging but adjustable test conditions for evaluating congestion-optimization algorithms.

Topology Dataset

Provides more than 250 realistic networks collected from Rocketfuel, DEFO, and Internet Topology Zoo sources, with missing capacities completed, extreme capacity variations normalized, disconnected components processed, and five consistently generated synthetic traffic matrices assigned to every supported topology.
