Uptyke

Uptyke is a purpose-built learning management system designed to respond to long-standing gaps in special needs education within the Kenyan context. Developed by Uptyke Education, the platform prioritizes accessibility for learners who are Deaf, visually impaired, or neurodivergent, while remaining fully aligned with the Kenyan Competency-Based Curriculum and Universal Design for Learning principles. Its interface is intentionally minimalist, using high-contrast visuals, large icons, and simple navigation to reduce cognitive overload and support learners with visual or neurological sensitivities. For Deaf learners, Kenyan Sign Language videos are embedded directly into lessons, ensuring instructions and concepts are clearly communicated rather than treated as add-ons. Functionally, Uptyke distinguishes itself through localized and disability-specific features, including interactive sign language content, native compatibility with assistive technologies such as screen readers and braille displays, and curriculum scripts vetted against KICD standards. A major strength is its offline capability, which allows learners in low-connectivity or remote areas to download lessons and continue learning without internet access. Performance is optimized for low-bandwidth environments, enabling multimedia-heavy content to load smoothly even on government-issued Digital Literacy Program devices.
