About SpectraSuite

SpectraSuite is a spectroscopy software platform from Ocean Insight that provides tools for spectroscopic analysis. It combines data acquisition, spectral analysis, and visualization features so users can interpret spectral data efficiently. SpectraSuite supports multiple light sources and detectors, enabling users to conduct a variety of experiments tailored to their specific requirements. The software is designed to handle large data sets and offers customizable reporting options for analysis documentation. Key capabilities: data acquisition spectral analysis real-time visualization customizable reports multi-detector support Best for: researchers and scientists that need advanced tools for spectroscopy and spectral data interpretation.

SpectraSuite, once the standard bearer for Ocean Optics' spectrometers, was a versatile and feature-rich software platform that served the needs of researchers and engineers for many years. As a Java-based application, it was praised for its cross-platform compatibility, running smoothly on Windows, macOS, and Linux, which provided valuable flexibility in diverse lab environments. The software's main strengths were its robust control over multiple spectrometers simultaneously and its powerful real-time data acquisition capabilities. The graphical interface provided users with the tools to see and manipulate spectral data, with adjustable parameters for integration time, scans to average, and boxcar smoothing to optimize signal quality. However, the passage of time revealed significant limitations that ultimately led to its obsolescence and replacement by modern software like OceanView. SpectraSuite is no longer officially supported, leaving users without access to security patches, bug fixes, or technical assistance. Its most pronounced weaknesses center on compatibility issues with modern operating systems and the frustrating "driver conflicts" that can arise when trying to run both SpectraSuite and newer software on the same machine.

Features

Key features

Multi-spectrometer management
SpectraSuite allowed users to control multiple USB spectrometers simultaneously within the same application. It could display data from each device on a single graph or in separate windows, which was useful for dual-beam referencing, process monitoring, and other advanced setups.
Real-time data acquisition
The software's "Scope mode" provided a live view of the spectrum, allowing users to see changes in real-time as the experimental conditions changed.
Data processing parameters
Users could adjust several parameters to control the quality and appearance of their spectral data.
Integration Time
This feature controls the period over which light is collected, affecting the overall signal intensity.
Scans to Average
By averaging multiple acquisitions, this reduces noise and improves the signal-to-noise ratio.
Boxcar Smoothing
This spatial averaging technique smooths the spectral data by averaging adjacent data points, which can also reduce noise.
Graphical and tabular data views
SpectraSuite offered multiple ways to view the data. The "Graph view" provided the standard visual representation of a spectrum, while the "Table view" displayed the underlying numeric data.
Color calculations
For applications involving color science, SpectraSuite could calculate color parameters like CIE illuminants, Color Rendering Index (CRI), and other metrics.
Modular architecture
The Java-based framework was built with a modular design, meaning different functions for acquisition, processing, and display were separate modules. This allowed for custom extensions and scripting for automated experiments.

Additional features

Data plotting and overlay
Users could easily zoom, scale, and save spectral plots, as well as overlay data from previously saved files for comparison.
Peak finding and metrics
A "Peak Finding" wizard guided users through identifying and calculating metrics for peaks within their spectra, such as center wavelength.
Spectral splicing
For users with multiple spectrometers covering different wavelength ranges, the software could stitch together the spectra to create a single, comprehensive plot.
Add-on modules
Ocean Optics offered specific add-on modules to extend functionality for niche applications, such as the SpectraSuite-PAR module for photosynthetically active radiation measurements.
Data storage
It included functions for saving both raw and processed spectral data for later analysis.
Hardware compatibility
SpectraSuite was compatible with a variety of hardware extensions, including National Instruments DAQ boards.
Dark and reference spectra management
For accurate measurements in absorbance or other modes, SpectraSuite could store dark and reference spectra, which were crucial for correcting raw data.
